Hi friends!

If you’ve listened to the podcast, or have come to a live show, you’ve definitely heard the Helder Brum and Friends theme song. Huge shout out to FunDMC (Daryn McIntyre) for writing and recording it. I fell in love with it from the second I heard it!

So much so that I instantly wanted to make a music video for it. After raising 7 million dollars (in Brum-Bucks) from several private investors, we began production.

The next 14 months on set was the most amazing and stressful experience I’ll probably ever live through. At one point the pressure of perfection caused my moustache to fall out

But it was all worth it. I think. Check it out.

Cool Lean™

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen the above photo in your feed a couple of weeks ago. It’s titled “Cool Lean”. But did you know there is a story behind Cool Lean? Yeah, that’s right. It’s not just a fun named I came up with while going through old photos, IT’S A PART OF MY LIFE!

When I was about 3 years old (The Helderinho Years) I was watching an old western film with my family. I can’t for the life of me remember what movie it was, but the thing I do remember was the first moment they showed the hero of the film. He was leaning with his back against a tree, with one foot up on the tree. Really casual.

I may have been three, but I understood cool. And this guy was cool! So I learned the lean. I had to! Do you have any idea how much pressure a 3-year-old has thrust at them to be smooth?! As you can tell from the above photo, I NAILED IT! My life would never be the same, and we all knew it.

Pretty much anytime someone wanted to take a photo of me, my answer was always the same, “Meet you at the tree in five, be ready to be cool.” There was talk that I might be a one trick pony, but I didn’t care. I knew the cool lean was my road to success, and I wasn’t planning on taking a detour.

But much like any super karate technique, if it goes unpracticed (even by a grand master), you can get sloppy. Once you get sloppy, your form suffers. Then it’s just a matter of time before you can’t even remember how you did it in the first place. Any great master will tell you, the key to greatness is repetition. But I was young and cocky, and thought my new-found success was eternal. I was a foolish little man.

Cool Lean?™

Cool Lean?™: You can already see my form starting to slip here. Maybe joining the Royal Canadian Navy (Tree Healing Unit) that summer was just too much responsibility on my plate, or maybe it was that I all of my free time watching He-Man, but I just wasn’t putting in the work, and I suffered greatly for it. Sloppy lean, half-assed smile and a 80% eye blink is a long cry from “The Glory Days”.

I wish I could tell you this was the worst it got, but I wasn’t even close to hitting rock bottom. If you are faint of heart, maybe you should stop reading now. For all the brave readers, thank you for reading my story. Now, where was I? Oh yeah, it got worse…

Pretty Cool Overall(s)™

Pretty Cool Overall(s): WHOA! What happened here? Some how I forgot the most important part of the lean, ALL OF YOUR BACK MUST MAKE CONTACT WITH THE TREE! You can’t support the overwhelming weight for “cool” with a single hand, you NEED the full back contact. I’ve become so reckless here that I’m basically building a house without taking a moment to lay down the foundation. Destined to crumble hard!

The Weird Tree Pose™

The Weird Tree Pose™: The moment I decided I didn’t need my hand to help support me, I created The Weird Tree Pose that my family and friends would forever make fun of me for. They were right to do so, I was a reckless maverick who needed to be brought back to earth immediately. No one should play god!

Fun in the Sun™

Fun in the Sun™: After months of trying to figure out what I was doing wrong, I knew I had to do something drastic to bring back the fans. That’s what inspired this “Taste of Summer!” photo shoot. I thought if people could see me just chillin’ in sandals and sunglasses, that they would forget my fall from grace. This did not work, and was not the end of countless stunts to drum up attention. Also, what was I thinking with all this hand-on-hip action?

The Carefree Kid™

The Carefree Kid™: I even stooped as low to try to appeal to my “peers” by taking this carefree, candid photo of me just hanging with a fun He-man action figure. I wasn’t fooling anyone, I completely lost it. I struck gold before I was mature enough to know how to deal with it, and it consumed me. I promised myself then that I wouldn’t let that happen again, it couldn’t happen again.

To this day, a picture can’t be taken with 9 meters of a tree without one of my cousins mention the weird tree pose. Here’s a fun photo of my lovely cousin Debbie and I taking turns doing the pose on a cool tree during our 2008 vacation to Terceira Island.

What you don’t see in this low-res photo is the tears welling up in my eyes. Is this my legacy? Is this how I will be immortalized in history? I hope knot*.

Wanna hear a fun story?

When I was a kid, I used to keep my eyes glues to the screen when the credits of a movie would start. I would read each one, just hoping to one day to see the name Helder pop up. I got teased about my name a lot as a kid, and I ended up hating my name so much. I felt so alone, with this weird name that NO OTHER KID at my school had.

I guess I thought if I found out that there was a cool movie star who had the same name as me, that would make it better.

Unfortunately, it never happened. Trust me, I didn’t stop after all the actors were done. No production assistant,  key grip, director, casting supervisor, editor or location consultant was named Helder. NOT EVEN THE SET CARPENTERS!

But this wasn’t new to me at all. I was completely used to not finding my name. The next time you walk by one of those souvenir racks that has something like mugs or bookmarks, you know the kind, the ones that already have everyone’s name on it. If you find one with the name Helder, I’ll give you $20*.

Well, I’m happy to say that I finally saw it! Also, it happened in the coolest way. Two of my friends put me in their recent short films, and both times I got to see my name on the big screen, in a room full of friends and loved ones. LIFE CAN BE THE COOLEST DREAM OF ALL!

I would like to quickly thank Sara Hennessey for having the faith to cast me in her absolutely heart warming, magical short film Secret Clubhouse. I loved this movie so much, Sara is the fucking best! Join the Facebook Page to keep up to date on when you can see it!

Also, a big shout out to Brian Barlow, who recently played a cut of Bridge’s New Jacket. THIS IS THE FUNNIEST MOVIE I HAVE SEEN IN A LONG LONG LONG TIME. I’m only on screen for a handful of sweet seconds, but I think we can all agree it’s the role I was born to play. Go find out more about it, and when you’ll be able to watch it for yourself.

I love my friends sooooooooo much! You guys are seriously my family. My wonderful family that I handpicked. You complete me. I can’t begin to tell you how much love and support I feel from my community, it fills me with so much strength that I could lift a car (which i could barely do just on my own).
